Who doesn’t like travelling? The essence of visiting different places and witnessing a new environment with a perfect blend of excitement and thrill! It is always refreshing. Whether it’s a small road trip or a journey covering thousands of miles, a good trip can clear your head and revitalize you. But as you may know, there is a species of mini-humans that do not enjoy being held back, and this is none other than our lovable toddlers. The mini-you is never going to really sit and enjoy the ride, in fact they are going to BE the ride. Factoring a child into a long journey will really change things up. This was something I learned after becoming a dad. Here are four simple tips to make travelling with toddlers easy!
1) Keep the Right Gear
The biggest change that I experienced as a dad-traveller was the significant change in baggage to carry. Yes, there were those days when a single backpack was enough to support my entire journey. However, when it comes to my little man, even ten bags is not enough. Over time, I have learned which baby essentials to carry and which to omit. Travelling with toddlers will get easier over time for you with experience. Aside from the baby bag, I usually take along the baby travel system (i.e. the car seat stroller combo) on long trips because they save the day. While I don’t need to elaborate just how important a stroller is to us parents, I would certainly mention the car seat as the Holy Grail. This keeps my son safe and seated through the journey.
2) Book in Advance
Whether you are flying or taking the train, you need to book ahead. Do not wait for the last minute to book your seat! You will end up in the worst situation possible. This whole “book ahead” thing comes in handy when you have a toddler in your arms. You get to know in advance what the seating is going to be like and this bit of information is very crucial for travelling with toddlers. Plus, calling in earlier gives you the chance to look into any available perks and book them too.
3) Manage the Additional Prep
The best way to avoid a hectic journey with a toddler is to plan it out and keep tabs on everything. For instance, you can be in the air flying to your destination and keep a look on your hotel. If you are planning to stay at a hotel, make sure to double-check your pick-up and drop-off arrangements. Plus, in such situations where you are actually going to be travelling further in-car before you reach your hotel, you can bring out the car seat so your baby can sleep comfortably. Travelling with toddlers is very do-able, it just takes additional prep.
4) Don’t Settle
Try not to settle for the cheaper option. They might seem attractive, but a little extra payment can actually save you from a lot of headache. While you can adjust to the small spaces and over-crowded transport, your toddler will not tolerate it. If you are travelling by air, then don’t hesitate to pay for premium seats if you can. They usually push to the further of the cabin, which not only gives you the advantage of getting off the plane quicker but also gives you more space which is just perfect when it comes to travelling with a toddler.
Last but not least, do not forget to enjoy the journey. It might look tough, but it will always be a memory you will cherish for life. Travelling with toddlers takes time to adjust, but it can be very rewarding.
